The Complete History of O2 Mobile UK

O2 is one of only two networks present on the very first day of UK mobile telephony — 7 January 1985 — launching simultaneously with Vodafone as the UK's two founding mobile networks.

The story of O2 begins with Telecom Securicor Cellular Radio Limited — a 60/40 joint venture between British Telecom and Securicor, formed in 1983. Having been awarded one of the UK's two original cellular licences, the network launched on 7 January 1985 as Cellnet, operating on analogue TACS technology. BT acquired Securicor's stake in 1999, rebranding to BT Cellnet. In 2001, BT spun off its mobile operations as the independently listed mmO2 plc. The O2 brand was introduced globally in 2002. In 2006, Telefónica acquired O2 plc for approximately £17.7 billion.

In 2021, O2 merged with Virgin Media to form Virgin Media O2 — a 50/50 JV between Telefónica and Liberty Global with ~£11bn revenues and 46M+ connections. By 2024–2026, O2 deployed 5G Standalone (5G+), becoming the UK's largest 5G SA network at 87% population coverage. O2 also became the first UK operator to offer direct-to-device satellite connectivity via O2 Satellite in 2026.

The Complete History of Three UK

Three launched in 2003 as the UK's first 3G-only mobile network with no 2G fallback — and built its identity around unlimited data and generous roaming long before rivals adopted either.

Three was launched on 3 March 2003 by Hutchison 3G UK Limited, a subsidiary of Hong Kong-based Hutchison Whampoa (now CK Hutchison Holdings). Its defining feature was launching exclusively on 3G — skipping 2G entirely — a commercially bold decision when 3G handsets were expensive and coverage was city-limited. Three systematically offered more data for less money, launching unlimited data plans years before rivals. Its Go Roam scheme — free roaming in an expanding list of countries — became Three's most celebrated feature. In 2015, CK Hutchison attempted to acquire O2 for £10.25 billion, but the European Commission blocked the deal in 2016. Three's subsequent merger with Vodafone UK completed in early 2025, creating VodafoneThree.

The Complete History of EE (Everything Everywhere)

EE holds two unique UK firsts: it launched the UK's first 4G network on 30 May 2012, and the UK's first 5G network on 30 May 2019 — exactly 7 years apart. It carries over 30 years of heritage through Orange (1994) and One2One/T-Mobile (1993).

Orange UK launched in April 1994, with per-second billing and iconic marketing — "The future's bright, the future's Orange." France Télécom acquired Orange in 2000 for £25.1 billion. One2One launched in September 1993 as the UK's first 1800MHz GSM digital network. Deutsche Telekom acquired it in 1999 for £8.4 billion, rebranding it T-Mobile UK in 2002. In 2010, both companies agreed to merge their UK operations into Everything Everywhere, rebranded EE in 2013. On 30 May 2012, EE launched the UK's first commercial 4G network — six months ahead of O2 and Vodafone. BT Group acquired EE in 2016 for £12.5 billion. EE's median 5G speed of 236 Mbps makes it the UK's fastest network as of 2026.

The Complete History of Tesco Mobile

Tesco Mobile is the only UK mobile network that awards Tesco Clubcard loyalty points on every pound spent on monthly bills — a feature completely unique to this MVNO and its 5.7 million customers.

Tesco Mobile was established in 2003 as a joint venture between Tesco PLC and O2. As an MVNO, it does not own physical network infrastructure. Instead, it purchases wholesale capacity from O2 and delivers services under the Tesco Mobile brand. Every customer uses the same masts and equipment as O2 subscribers — receiving identical 4G and 5G coverage.

Initially PAYG-only, expanded to Pay Monthly in 2008. The Clubcard integration in 2012 made Tesco Mobile the only UK network awarding loyalty points on mobile bills. The Home From Home scheme provides free roaming in 48 countries. Tesco Mobile has won the Uswitch Best Mobile Network for Customer Service for five consecutive years: 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026 — an unprecedented achievement in UK mobile.

The Complete History of Vodafone UK

Vodafone made the UK's very first commercial mobile call on 1 January 1985, and its 2000 hostile takeover of Mannesmann AG for £112 billion remains the largest corporate acquisition in history.

The story begins with Racal Electronics, a British defence company. In 1982, its subsidiary Racal Telecom Limited received one of the UK's two original cellular licences. The network launched on 1 January 1985 when Sir Ernest Harrison called Sir Anthony Bevins from Parliament Square — the UK's very first commercial mobile call. The name Vodafone combined Voice, Data and Fone. Racal Telecom was partially floated in 1988 and fully demerged as Vodafone Group plc in 1991.

The 1999 AirTouch merger ($60bn) and 2000 hostile Mannesmann takeover (£112bn) — still the world's largest corporate takeover — made Vodafone one of the planet's most powerful companies. In 2013, Vodafone sold its 45% stake in Verizon Wireless for $130 billion. In the UK, Vodafone has remained a top-4 operator with particular strength in enterprise. The VodafoneThree merger completed in 2025, creating the UK's largest mobile network.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to the most common UK mobile questions.

What is a SIM Only plan and who should consider one?
+
A SIM-only plan provides a SIM card with monthly calls, texts and data — no handset included. You use it in a phone you already own. Because no device cost is included, SIM-only plans are typically 30–50% cheaper per month than equivalent Pay Monthly phone deals. Best for: anyone satisfied with their current phone, those who bought a phone outright, or customers coming to the end of a Pay Monthly contract wanting to reduce costs. Available on 1-month rolling, 12 or 24-month terms.
How do I keep my phone number when switching networks?
+
Text PAC to 65075 from your current mobile. You receive a PAC (Porting Authorisation Code) within one minute, free of charge. Give this code to your new network when signing up — your number transfers within one working day. The PAC is valid for 30 days. To switch without keeping your number, text STAC to 75075. Number portability is free and available on all UK networks.
What is 5G Standalone (5G SA / 5G+) and how does it differ from standard 5G?
+
Standard 5G uses Non-Standalone (NSA) architecture — 5G radios for data but still using 4G core network infrastructure for signalling. 5G Standalone (5G SA) uses a pure end-to-end 5G core network with no 4G dependency. Benefits: potentially sub-5ms latency (vs ~20ms NSA), network slicing, better performance in congested areas. O2 (5G+) and EE (5G+) operate 5G SA networks in the UK. Three and Vodafone currently use NSA architecture.
What changed with UK mobile roaming after Brexit?
+
Before Brexit, EU "Roam Like at Home" rules required UK networks to charge UK prices in the EU. These ended 31 December 2020. Now each UK network sets its own terms independently. Three includes free roaming in 71 countries (Go Roam); Tesco Mobile includes 48 countries free (Home From Home); EE charges ~£2.29/day on Essentials plans but includes free EU roaming on higher tiers; O2 and Vodafone vary by plan. Ofcom requires a default £45 data spend cap. Always check your specific plan before travelling.
What is an eSIM and which phones support it?
+
An eSIM is a digital SIM permanently built into your device — no physical card. Activate by scanning a QR code. Compatible devices: iPhone XS and newer; Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer flagship models; Google Pixel 3 and newer. All major UK networks (O2, EE, Three, Vodafone, Tesco Mobile) support eSIM. Always verify your specific device model on the network's compatibility list before ordering.
What should I check before signing any mobile contract?
+
Key checks: (1) Signal coverage at home, work and key locations using network and Ofcom checkers; (2) Actual data usage — check in phone settings; (3) Total cost — monthly × months + upfront; (4) Annual price rise clause — maximum cash increase per year; (5) Early termination fee; (6) 5G inclusion and device compatibility; (7) Roaming terms for your travel habits; (8) Whether your phone is unlocked if switching networks.
Is wondersolmeo.online affiliated with O2, EE or any UK network?
+
No. Wondersolmeo.online is completely independent. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, operated by or financially connected to O2, Virgin Media O2, EE, BT Group, Three UK, CK Hutchison, Tesco Mobile, Tesco PLC, Vodafone Group, Liberty Global or any UK mobile network, MVNO or telecoms entity. We do not sell plans, SIM cards or handsets. Brand names are used only for factual educational reference.
What happens when my Pay Monthly contract ends?
+
Most networks continue billing at the same rate after minimum contract end unless you act. If you had a Pay Monthly phone deal, the handset is fully paid off at contract end — continuing at the same rate means overpaying for a phone you already own. Options: (1) Upgrade to new device on fresh contract; (2) Switch to cheaper SIM-only — often significantly cheaper; (3) Port to another network using a PAC code. Review your options 1–2 months before your contract end date.
What is the difference between an MNO and MVNO?
+
An MNO (Mobile Network Operator) owns physical infrastructure — spectrum licences, masts and core network equipment. O2, EE, Three and Vodafone are all MNOs. An MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) does not own infrastructure — it purchases wholesale capacity from an MNO and resells it under its own brand. Tesco Mobile is the UK's largest MVNO, running entirely on O2's physical network. Customers get identical coverage to O2 subscribers with Tesco's own unique features on top.
Are mid-contract price increases legal?
+
Yes, provided clearly disclosed at point of sale. Most UK networks apply annual increases linked to CPI plus a fixed additional percentage. From 2025, Ofcom requires these to be stated in clear cash terms at the time of signing. Tesco Mobile offers select plans with no mid-contract price increases. Always read the price rise clause before signing any mobile contract.

About O2 Mobile UK

O2 is a Major Network Operator (MNO) serving approximately 22.4 million UK subscribers. It operates under Virgin Media O2 — a 50/50 JV between Telefónica and Liberty Global (formed June 2021). O2 originated as Cellnet in 1985 and is one of only two networks present on the very first day of UK mobile telephony.

O2 SIM Only Plans — Information

O2 SIM-only provides a SIM with monthly calls, texts and data — no handset. Available on 1-month rolling, 12-month and 24-month terms. Data ranges from small allowances to unlimited. 5G+ (5G Standalone) included on eligible tiers with a 5G-compatible device. eSIM available on compatible devices.

What to Check Before Choosing an O2 SIM Only Plan

  • Coverage at home and work using O2's checker and Ofcom's independent tool
  • Your actual data usage — check in phone Settings before choosing an allowance
  • Whether 5G is included and your device is 5G-compatible
  • Annual price rise clause — cash amount must be disclosed at point of sale
  • EU roaming terms for your specific plan tier
  • Whether your device is unlocked if switching from another network

O2 Pay Monthly Phone Contracts — Information

O2 Pay Monthly contracts include a new handset with device cost spread over 24 months plus an airtime allowance. Annual price rise applies. At contract end: upgrade, switch to SIM-only, or port to another network. Early exit fee applies before minimum term ends.

💡 At contract end, SIM-only is often significantly cheaper — the device is now paid off. Always compare before your end date.

O2 5G+ (5G Standalone)

O2's 5G+ uses pure 5G Standalone (5G SA) architecture. As of early 2026, covers 87% of the UK population — UK's largest 5G SA network. Included at no extra cost on eligible plans with a compatible device.

O2 Satellite

In 2026, O2 became the first UK operator with direct-to-device satellite connectivity. Extends coverage to remote areas unreachable by masts. Works with compatible smartphones — no extra hardware needed.

SIM Only Plans — UK Information Guide

What SIM-only means, who it suits, and what to check before signing.

What is a SIM Only Plan?

A SIM-only plan provides a SIM card with monthly calls, texts and data — no handset. Use it in a phone you already own. Typically 30–50% cheaper per month than equivalent Pay Monthly phone deals because no device cost is included.

Contract Length Options

1-Month Rolling: Maximum flexibility. Cancel with 30 days' notice. Usually slightly more expensive per month. Best for testing a network or uncertain needs.

12-Month: Balanced — moderate commitment, better pricing than rolling.

24-Month: Usually best monthly value. 2-year commitment — check annual price rise clauses carefully.

Data Allowance Guide

  • 1–5 GB: Light users mainly on Wi-Fi
  • 10–20 GB: Moderate use — social, maps, occasional streaming
  • 30–50 GB: Regular streaming on the go
  • 100 GB+: Heavy users or mobile hotspot
  • Unlimited: No cap — check speed limits and hotspot terms

💡 Check your usage: iPhone → Settings → Mobile Data. Android → Settings → Network → Mobile Data Usage.

Checklist Before Signing

  • Coverage at home, work and key locations (network checker + Ofcom)
  • Whether your phone is unlocked (required if switching networks)
  • Annual price rise clause — cash amount per year
  • Data overage policy if you exceed allowance
  • EU / international roaming terms
  • 5G inclusion and device compatibility
  • Notice period to cancel
Home › Pay Monthly Guide

Pay Monthly Phones — UK Information Guide

How Pay Monthly phone contracts work, cost structure and what to check before signing.

What is a Pay Monthly Phone Contract?

A Pay Monthly contract bundles a new handset with airtime (calls, texts and data) into one monthly direct debit. Device cost is spread over the contract (usually 24 months). At contract end, you own the phone and can upgrade, switch to SIM-only, or port to another network.

Cost Breakdown

  • Upfront payment: Optional — reduces monthly amount
  • Monthly device element: Handset cost divided across the term
  • Monthly airtime element: Calls, texts and data allowance
  • Total cost: Upfront + (monthly × months) = true total paid

💡 Always calculate total contract cost — not just the monthly figure. Lower monthly over 36 months often costs more than higher monthly over 24 months.

Annual Price Rises

Most UK networks apply annual increases (CPI + fixed %). From 2025, Ofcom requires these disclosed in cash terms at point of sale. Tesco Mobile offers select plans with no increases.

At Contract End

Most networks continue billing at the same rate after contract end. The handset is paid off — continuing at the same rate means overpaying. Options: upgrade; switch to cheaper SIM-only; port to another network. Review 1–2 months before end date.

Home › Pay As You Go Guide

Pay As You Go — UK Information Guide

How PAYG works, who it suits, and how it compares to SIM-only contracts.

What is Pay As You Go?

PAYG means paying in advance — no monthly contract. Top up credit, buy 30-day rolling bundles. Stop topping up whenever you no longer need the service. No penalties.

Who is PAYG Best For?

  • Very occasional or low-usage users
  • Children needing controlled mobile access
  • Backup SIMs used occasionally
  • Short-term UK visitors needing a temporary number
  • Anyone preferring no monthly direct debit

💡 If you buy the same PAYG bundle monthly, a 1-month rolling SIM-only plan typically offers 2–3× more data for the same spend — with the same ability to cancel with 30 days' notice.

eSIM — UK Technology Guide

What eSIM is, compatible devices, how activation works and UK network support.

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a digital SIM permanently built into your device hardware — no physical card to insert or remove. Activate a plan by scanning a QR code. From iPhone 15 US models onwards, some devices are eSIM-only with no physical SIM tray.

How to Activate

  1. Order eSIM plan from your chosen UK network
  2. Receive QR code by email or in network app
  3. Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM → Scan QR code
  4. Profile downloads and activates (usually within minutes)

Compatible Devices

iPhone: XS, XS Max, XR (2018) and all newer. Samsung Galaxy: S20 series (2020) and newer flagships. Google Pixel: Pixel 3 (2018) and newer.

⚠️ Always verify your specific device model on your chosen network's eSIM compatibility list before ordering.

UK Networks Supporting eSIM

All five major UK networks support eSIM: O2, EE, Three, Vodafone and Tesco Mobile.

Benefits

  • Instant activation — no waiting for a physical SIM by post
  • Dual SIM — UK + travel eSIM simultaneously on compatible phones
  • Travel — add local eSIM abroad without removing UK SIM
  • No physical loss — nothing to drop, damage or lose

5G & Coverage — UK Information Guide

4G vs 5G vs 5G Standalone — how to check signal and what affects coverage quality.

4G vs 5G vs 5G Standalone

4G LTE: Typical 20–70 Mbps real-world. Sufficient for all everyday tasks. All major UK networks: 99%+ 4G population coverage.

5G: Typical 100–500+ Mbps. Lower latency, greater capacity. Benefits heavy users, hotspot use, 4K streaming. Requires 5G-compatible device.

5G Standalone (5G SA / 5G+): Pure 5G core — no 4G dependency. Sub-5ms latency potential, network slicing, better congested-area performance. O2 (5G+) and EE (5G+) are UK's current 5G SA operators.

How to Check Coverage

  • Network checkers: Each network's site has a postcode checker for 4G/5G indoor/outdoor signal
  • Ofcom (ofcom.org.uk): Independent multi-network postcode comparison tool
  • Real-world test: Test a PAYG SIM at your actual premises before committing to any contract

💡 Wi-Fi Calling: all major UK networks support this — calls over home broadband when signal is weak. Enable in phone Settings. Free to use.

International Roaming — UK Guide

Post-Brexit roaming, each network's policy, and tips for travelling abroad.

What Changed After Brexit

Before Brexit, EU "Roam Like at Home" rules required UK networks to charge UK prices in EU countries. These ended 31 December 2020. Each UK network now sets its own independent roaming terms.

⚠️ Always check your specific plan's current roaming terms with your network before travelling. Policies change frequently. Guidance below is general only.

UK Network Roaming — General Guidance (2026)

Three (Go Roam): 71 countries free on eligible Pay Monthly plans. UK allowance used as normal. Fair use on unlimited in certain destinations. Check three.co.uk for current list and FUP.

Tesco Mobile (Home From Home): 48 destinations free. UK allowance as normal. Check tescomobile.com for current destination list.

EE: Essentials tier ~£2.29/day EU. All Rounder: free EU roaming. Full Works: worldwide (50GB FUP). Check your specific tier at ee.co.uk.

O2: Terms vary by plan. Some include EU roaming; others need a daily add-on. Check My O2 app or o2.co.uk before travelling.

Vodafone: Depends on specific plan. 100+ countries coverage. Check vodafone.co.uk.

Ofcom £45 Spend Cap

All UK networks must apply a default £45 data roaming spend cap per billing period (excl. VAT). Data roaming pauses automatically at this cap.

Travel Tips

  • Check each destination country's specific roaming terms before departure
  • Download offline maps before travelling
  • Use Wi-Fi Calling over hotel Wi-Fi to avoid roaming call charges
  • Disable background app refresh when roaming
  • Verify the £45 spend cap is active on your account
